Man charged with fraud for selling iPhone boxes filled with rice

Someone may have outdone Apple when it comes to wrapping relatively useless products in pretty packaging.

Police in Toronto are looking for more victims after a man was charged with fraud for allegedly selling an iPhone box filled with rice, instead of a phone, to people on the online classifieds website Kijiji.

Police say two victims have come forward, saying they met up with a man in northwest Toronto and paid cash for what they believed to be an iPhone 6 in a sealed box.

The victims allege that when they later opened the box, it was filled with rice — and no phone.

On Wednesday, police charged a 21-year-old man with two counts of fraud under $5,000 and other related charges. He appeared in court the following day.

But police say there may be more victims, and they’re asking anyone with information to come forward to help in the investigation.
